How To Clean Split Rail Fence
Overview
Cedar split rail fences can last a very long time and increase curb appeal when well cared for! Cleaning and sealing your split rail fence with stain will give it a fresh look and a few more years of protection! This fence was looking very weathered, so we used the Flexio 3000 to quickly give it a refresh!
Before
After
Prepare the fence for stain by power washing with specialized soap made for pressure washers. Cedar is prone to splintering, so do not get too close to the fence with the pressure washer. Allow to dry 24-48 hours before staining.
The FLEXiO 3000's Detail Finish Nozzle is perfect for slim split rails and thin oil based stain. Mix the stain thoroughly and then fill the cup with stain and attach it to the Detail Finish Nozzle. Connect the nozzle to the turbine. Adjust the flow of the sprayer. Start with a low flow and increase gradually to meet your needs. Test the flow on a piece of scrap wood or cardboard.
We removed the rails from the fence and placed them on saw horses in order to protect the garden around the fence. If you don't have any areas to stay clear of spraying, you can skip this step and spray everything in place.
Spray the stain onto the rails using a slow continuous spray to get even coverage across the long rails. The cedar will absorb the stain quickly, but have a cloth handy to wipe any drips or excess stain. If you removed the rails from the posts, turn the rails on the saw horses to spray the other side after the stain has absorbed.
Use cardboard or plastic drop cloths to protect areas around the base of the posts from overspray. We protected the deck, driveway, and garden edging stones.
Spray the posts on each side starting at the top and working your way down. Use one long continuous spray on each side. Pause at the bottom and move to the top of the next side. Continue until all sides of each post are done.

PUT THE FENCE BACK TOGETHER
Once everything is dry, put the rails back into the posts and admire your freshly stained fence!
Stain makes a big difference in curb appeal and your fence is now protected from further weathering!
